Pretty vividly I recall some of these commercials, maybe better than other media because I decided to enter the contest when I was young.
There were at least 2 commercials produced, probably about 30 seconds each when aired, that depicted characters from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends talking directly to the audience about a contest being held for the series. The contest allowed users to mail in an idea for a character (an imaginary friend), a drawing of it, and some basic traits, and if you were lucky, your character would be chosen to be used in the series. The commercials, from what I remember, were completely animated and voiced separate of the actual series (they weren't just clips) and both of the commercials I remember had the characters talking directly to the audience. Bloo and Mac were in one commercial, with Eduardo and Coco in another commercial. The characters would talk briefly and announce the contest, and then a narrator would take over talking and show clips of the characters performing tasks while the narrator gave the audience instructions on how to enter the contest.
I did some digging, couldn't find any of the commercials. I dug further, looking for some reference to an imaginary friend character that may have appeared a short time after the contest- only once or twice. Couldn't find that either, and I don't remember when the contest was held for sure. The Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends wiki doesn't seem to reference any character contest at all. My gut tells me that the character Cheese was the contest winner's submission, with two reasons;
1) Cheese, even early on, stuck out in the series for me. He felt completely different of all the other characters, like he wasn't a professionally created character.
2) I didn't see this until I was doing my searching, but the plot for S2E7 starts off with: "One morning, Mac wakes up to find that he is unintentionally created another imaginary friend named Cheese..." Cheese debuted as a character on May 6th, 2005, in the episode Mac Daddy.
If I'm right, this would put the Character Contest Commercials to have aired sometime between the start of the series (August 13, 2004) and May of 2005. I'm taking 6 days away from the airdate of S2E7 to compensate for at least some of the work that must be done after running a contest and prior to introducing a new character into a 30-minute animated TV episode.
What strikes me as odd is just the complete lack of reference to the contest. As if not only did the media part of it disappear, but also how there's no mention of the winning character being intertwined into the story.
Also, I know I lost the contest. Looking back, my character was probably weirder than Cheese.
