I used to have a copy of that soundtrack at my home in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - it was a gift from my mom. I used to play that record whenever I could, until we were finally unable to play the record altogether. One of the things I noticed about the soundtrack was that there was dialogue added where there was no dialogue in the actual special ("We needed the back of your nice brown head to paint the pattern for the Jack O'lantern we brought to the hallowe'en party."). Sadly, I allowed my father to give all of our records away back in 2016, and they ended up at the used audio store at the Lincoln Fields Mall.

This is not lost, it is widely available on streaming and whatnot. A dialogue free version was also found and released recently.
"oooh, you're a- a freaked out child in the woods..."
That was not a read-along record that l had - it was an LP with no book.
It seems like the soundtrack was not properly released on vinyl until 2018, so you must be misremembering
The exact added dialogue they’re remembering is in the video I linked. Snippets of the music from the special did exist on two different read-along records with dialogue released in the 70’s. That’s the “soundtrack” they’re remembering, their copy just didn’t have the book during the time they had it.

You know, I kind of just want to find the first airing of this special in general. What if it is different from the special we see to day in the way A Charlie Brown Christmas was? It would be very interesting to see the differences.

There’s no known differences besides the Coca Cola/Dolly Madison sponsor tags that were eventually cut out from the beginning and end.
No, my album NEVER had a book - the record came to me in a single cardboard sleeve with a cover bearing the same picture that was posted online.
Well I can tell you for a fact that the dialogue you’re describing came from that version of the soundtrack, just listen to the video I linked. It’s very likely yours was just repackaged or the book was lost before it was given to you.
There was NO version of the soundtrack released prior to 2018 as a stand alone without a book, so it’s either one of the 1978 read along versions, both of which are LPs and state they came with a book on the sleeves. It doesn’t matter if yours had a book or not by the time you got it, the soundtrack itself that you’re describing has never been lost. Facts are facts. archive.org/details/GreatPumpkinVinyl

There aren't any *known* differences because it hasn't been found yet. There could be some differences. We don't know.
When l was a child about nine years old, it was one of my birthday presents. It was so long ago now, and so much has happened since then! I've never forgotten the fun l had listening to that album.
Found a picture of my old album at discogs.com. It turns out this was actually the audio from the special on a 12 inch record, which is enhanced by extra dialog. It's available at the site and the serial number is 2604.
